The Shack

At long last I've got around to updating the web site! Many things have happened since the last page. Like the beard for one and some weight loss, but from a radio point of view I had a small accident when lowering the mast to repair a pre-amp, the rope used on the tilt over winch snapped ! The result was that nearly all the antennas were destroyed. After a long time I got around to straightening the mast and started on a box of 4 for 23cm. The antennas were designed by Roy (G8CKN) and I must thank him for all the help in getting them up and running. Since first updating this site I now have added to the mast, so I now have a new dual band collinear, 5ele 2Mtr beam, 9ele 70cm beam, 15ele 13cm beam and the box of 4 for 23cm. Also below the rotator I have a stand off with an alford slot for 23cm and camera on its own rotator.

Bands I'm Active on

(in some cases, almost!)

HF Well this consist of a Yaesu FT-757GX II with a full size G5RV and long wire with active preamp for LF listening. I'm not that active on HF now days as with out the beam it all seems so quite. The only thing I have done lately is to listen to the LF bands (below 150Khz).
6mtrs The Yaesu FT-690R II is the rig for this band with a mobile whip being used in the loft. As with HF, not been that active of late due to TVI problems with the whip in the loft. Also I have a band 1 TV which I couple up to the Whip when there are lifts on 6mtrs.
4mtrs This was the band that I used for packet to access the DX cluster. The radio is a Motorola MC Micro it's the 8 channel version and has some packet frequencies programmed in as well as some simplex channels. This is unused at the moment due to lack of an antenna.
2mtrs I might as well have a single channel radio for this band as the dial always reads 144.750Mhz (ATV calling) HI, but instead I have a Yaesu FT-290R with a 60watt amp.
70cm A Standard C78 with matching 10watt amp is the radio for this band and is used mainly for Logging onto the local ATV repeater GB3AT located near Winchester Hampshire. Although it has become useful lately to speak to Noel (G8GTZ) in Basingstoke via GB3AW as the 2mtr link is non-existent. Also I'm active on TV on this band with a Microwave Modules MTV-435 transmitter. The receive is  home brewed based on a TV tuner. I have been known to go portable with the TV gear so if you would like to make a sked then email me at john@jmkl.freeserve.co.uk.
23cm This is the band that started me off on ATV when way back I built a Solent based transceiver. I still use the Solent but with many more mods to it, and It now has  a 20watt brick and home brew pre-amp attached to it. Not only am I active from home but I'm very active portable as well, I'm always looking to work new faces so if you want to make a sked then email me at john@jmkl.freeserve.co.uk and we'll see what we can do.
13cm I'm very new to this band and am still getting bits together. At the moment it consists of a MFG 13cm TX with a California low noise downconverter. The TX unit is one that is available from Giles (G1MFG), if you want to look at these units and for 23cm then look at www.g1mfg.com. At the moment I've only tried this set-up portable where a P5 was received by Mike G8LES over a path of about 9.5 miles, using about 8mW and a 60cm prime focus dish feed with a WA3RMX tri-band feed. A 1Watt amplifier is on order and it is hoped that I will be able to set some thing up at home. As with 23cm if you want to make a sked on 13cm then email me at john@jmkl.freeserve.co.uk. Update the 1Watt amplifier has turned up and I have now worked over 50miles with the set-up.(walbury hill to charterhouse hill)
3cm Played with this band some time ago but did not get that much interest from local ATV'ers. But now Noel (G8GTZ) and Steve (G7BVK) are active on this band and we are in the process of trying out various portable sites to test the gear out. We're up to about 20 miles now with P5 pictures both ways. It is hoped that we will all take part in a cross channel test on August 12+13th 2000 organised by Bob Platts (G8OZP). We are hoping to do this from Dungeness on the Kent coast. As with all the other TV bands if you wish to make a sked then email me at john@jmkl.freeserve.co.uk.Update I now have worked over 50miles over the same path as 13cm. Also the Dungeness trip was a success with three Dutch stations being worked on 3cm, with the best at over 150miles. This was done on Noels (G8GTZ) set-up which has only 30mW into a 60cm offset dish. Toward the end of the day we could see the Dutch stations with just the LNB waving around in the air !!

New Update I'm now active on 3cm narrow band SSB see the new Microwave site for more details.
